This website
This website has no ads and no tracking pixels. Fonts and icons are served from this website itself, not from Google or another third party.
Analytics, only if you allow it. When you first visit, a small banner asks whether we may count your visit. Only if you click Allow do we load Amplitude (Amplitude, Inc., San Francisco, USA). It then stores an ID in a cookie and in your browser's storage, and records which pages you open, what you click, a replay of how you move through the page (text you type is hidden), your rough location from your IP address, and your browser and device type. We use this only to see which pages work and to improve the site. Data is processed in the USA; Amplitude is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Legal basis: your consent, Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR and § 25 (1) TDDDG. If you click No thanks, nothing is loaded. You can change your mind any time with Analytics settings in the footer.
When you open a page, the hosting provider processes your IP address, browser type and the page you asked for, so the page can be delivered and the site protected against attacks. These server logs are kept only briefly. Legal basis: Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR (our legitimate interest in running a secure website).

The Highlightr app
Everything Highlightr does with your text, voice and calls happens on your Mac. Suggestions, spelling, dictation, meeting transcripts, notes and your writing history are processed and stored only there. Your writing history is encrypted, and you can delete it in Settings at any time.
The app only goes online for these things:
- Setup downloads. The AI models and dictionaries are downloaded once from Hugging Face and GitHub. Like any download, these services see your IP address. No text of yours is sent.
- Update checks. The app asks highlightr.app if there's a new version and downloads it from there. This request contains your IP address and app version.
- License keys. If you enter a license key, the app checks it with our payment provider, Lemon Squeezy. It sends the key and a random ID for your Mac, nothing else. The check repeats now and then.
Legal basis: Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR (providing the app and the license you asked for) and Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR (keeping the app up to date and secure).
Buying a license
Purchases are handled by Lemon Squeezy, which acts as the seller (merchant of record) and processes your name, email, payment details and billing address. Their privacy policy applies: lemonsqueezy.com/privacy. We receive your name, email and order details so we can help with your license and refunds.
Email and feedback
If you email us or use Send Feedback in the app, we receive your email address and what you write. Send Feedback opens your own mail app with a draft, so you see everything before it's sent. App logs attached to feedback never contain the text you typed. We use this only to answer you, and delete it when it's no longer needed. Legal basis: Art. 6 (1) (b) and (f) GDPR.
Contact form
If you use the contact form, your name, email, topic and message are sent through Formspree (Formspree, Inc., USA), which forwards them to us by email. Formspree processes this data on our behalf under a data processing agreement and the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. We use it only to answer you. Legal basis: Art. 6 (1) (b) and (f) GDPR. Formspree's privacy policy: formspree.io/legal/privacy-policy.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct, delete and restrict processing of your data, to data portability, and to object to processing based on legitimate interest. Just email hello@highlightr.app.
You can also complain to a data protection authority, for example the Hessian Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (HBDI), Wiesbaden.
