Question 1

What is Highlightr?

Accepted Answer

A writing assistant that lives in your Mac's menu bar. It suggests how your sentence could go on, fixes typos, turns speech into text and writes down your meetings, in almost every app you use. The AI runs on your Mac, not in the cloud.

Question 2

Which apps does it work in?

Accepted Answer

Almost every app with a text field: Mail, Slack, Notion, Word, Chrome, Safari, Notes and more. Terminals start off, because Tab already completes commands there. You can switch it off in any app.

Question 3

What do I need?

Accepted Answer

A Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or newer), macOS 14 or later, and about 3 GB of free space for the AI models.

Question 4

Which languages does it support?

Accepted Answer

English for now.

Question 5

Does my text leave my Mac?

Accepted Answer

No. Suggestions, spelling, dictation and meeting notes all run on your Mac. Highlightr only goes online to download its AI models once during setup, to check for updates and to check a license key. Your text, voice and calls are never sent.

Question 6

What does "learns my writing" store?

Accepted Answer

The text you write, so suggestions can sound like you. It's encrypted and stays on your Mac. You can delete it for one app or all apps at once in Settings.

Question 7

Why does it need Accessibility permission?

Accepted Answer

To see the text field you're typing in, so it can show suggestions right at your cursor. macOS asks once during setup.

Question 8

Does a bot join my meetings?

Accepted Answer

No. Highlightr records the call on your Mac, so nobody else in the meeting sees an extra guest. macOS asks for Microphone and Screen Recording permission so it can hear both sides.

Question 9

Does it work offline?

Accepted Answer

Yes. After the one-time model download, everything works without internet.

Question 10

Is it really free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every feature is free until 31 December 2026.

Question 11

What happens on 1 January 2027?

Accepted Answer

Highlightr switches to the free version on its own: 100 words a day from suggestions and dictation (your own typing never counts) and meeting notes up to 20 minutes each. Buy it once for €14.95 to unlock everything again.

Question 12

Is it a subscription?

Accepted Answer

No. €14.95 once, and it's yours. No monthly or yearly fees.

Question 13

Are updates free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Bug fixes and new features are all included, and they install themselves.

Question 14

How many Macs can I use it on?

Accepted Answer

One license works on one Mac.

Question 15

Can I get a refund?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If Highlightr isn't for you, email us within 14 days of buying and you get your money back in full.

Question 16

How do I accept a suggestion?

Accepted Answer

Press ⇥ Tab to take the next word, ⌥⇥ Option+Tab to take all of it, or esc to hide it. Or just keep typing.

Question 17

How do I turn it off in one app?

Accepted Answer

Click the Highlightr icon in the menu bar and switch off the app you're in. It remembers your choice.

Question 18

How do I report a bug or ask for a feature?

Accepted Answer

Use Send Feedback in the Highlightr menu, or email hello@highlightr.app. Every message gets read.
